I rewatched the Disney movie, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, for the first time in over 10 years and was quite surprised to learn that there was an actual language used by the Atlanteans.

After I finished the movie I decided to look it up and see what this "Atlantean language" really was. It turns out none other than Marc Okrand, the inventer of Klingon, created the language for Disney! What's even more amazing is that Atlantean is a full language not just a list of some words.

However, it turns out the copyright (you can apparently copyright a language) is under Disney, and they've decided to not let any of the details slip out to the general public. Some other speculate that originally they planned to continue to use the language as a way to engage the fandom, but after the movie flopped most it seems to have just been swept under the rug.

However, in an amazing Internet story, Atlantean seems to have transcended its own fiction and amateur linguists have actively worked at cracking the language with what little information is available, much like is done for real ancient languages.

Unfortunately, it seems most activity on Atlantean has died down, and most of the websites that once hosted useful information seem to be offline now. Fortunately though, the Atlantean Language Institute is still online, and although the site is messy, it has a lot of great information.

The site's creator, who goes by the name Keran Shadlag in Wiltem Adlantisag, has a contageous enthousiasm for the language that really lets you get a peak inside the head of someone passionate about historical linguistics.

The Atlantean language itself is rather interesting too. It was designed to be a kind of "root language" for all the languages on Earth. In the movie this is used as a kind of Deus Ex Linguae, so the Atlanteans can understand all languages on Earth.

While the concept is a bit much, the idea did lead to the creation of a rather interesting language.

When I stumble upon something like this I always wonder how far the language can actually be used, and have spent the last couple of days reading up on what little information their is in an effort to make myself competent enough to use the language. At the moment I've only been adapting the existing canon and formating in a way that makes it much easier to follow. Time permitted, I'd like to then take that and make viable lessons that I'd publish here or something.

Denove en Ĉinio

Mi nun denove estas en Ĉinio. Tiu jaro pasis tre rapide kaj estis eble

Ekde novulo ĝis spertetulo

Mi estas John Bauer, Usonano kiu faris staĝon ĉe E@I. Antaŭ unu jaro mi eĉ ne konis Esperanton, sed nun estas granda parto de mia vivo, dank'al ĉio, kion mi spertis en Esperantujo ĝis nun.

Kiam oni diris al mi, ke mi iros al JES, kaj mi partoprenos en tiu aranĝo, kiun mi antaŭ nur kelkaj semajnoj eĉ ne konis, mi ne vere sciis kiel mi devus senti. Nun mi scias ke tiu malkontenta sento tute ne pravis.

Mia tempo kun Esperanto ne estas longa. Mi lernis ĝin per la reto kaj nur iomete parolis ĝin kun la loka klubo en mia urbo en Francio. Tamen, Mi iom-post-iom vidis ke homoj reale uzas tiun lingvon kaj mi post nur kelkaj monatoj lernante ĝin uzas ĝin per la Pasporta Servo en Parizo.

Ĉio en Esperantujo daŭre estas pli mapli novaĵo por mi, kaj antaŭ nur tri monatoj mi neniam partoprenis iun ajn esperanto-aranĝon. La granda aranĝo, kiu estas JES, estis io, kion mi neniam povus imagi antaŭe. Eĉ pli bone estis la fakto ke mi povis ĝin partopreni kun mia koramikino, Xiaoyun.

Mi kaj ŝi venis per stipendio, do devis ne nur partopreni, sed ankaŭ helpi kun la aranĝo. Plie, tiu aranĝo estis dum mia staĝo ĉe E@I, do mi devis labori kaj helpi kiel staĝanto. Tamen mi tre ŝatis tion, kaj mi daŭre opinias ke estas vere amuze kunbabili kaj labori per Esperanto. Mi vendis librojn kaj faris taskojn Esperante, kaj tiuj taskoj plaĉegis min.

Dum la aranĝo, mi plej ŝatis ke mi eblis renkonti homojn el multaj landoj kaj babiladi kun ili pri ĉio kaj nenio. Iu etaĵo, kiu tamen estis interesa laŭ mi, estas ke mi povis renkonti homojn, kiujn mi ja jam konis. Tiuj famaj homoj, kiuj antaŭ nur kelkaj monatoj mi ne kredus ke mi povus renkonti ilin, estis apud mi kiel ĉiu. Tra la nokto mi babilis kaj kun tiuj famaj homoj kaj kun novaj amikoj kiel ili estus miaj malnovaj amikoj. Tiu sento, tiu evento, tiu aranĝo, ĉio estis pli bona ol mia antaŭpenso.

Je la komenco mi ankoraŭ ne sciis, se mi ŝatus tiun grandan aranĝon, sed je la fino mi jam ne volis ke ĝi finiĝos. Mi renkontis multegajn homojn. Mi aŭdis koncertojn kaj eĉ gajnis la 4an premion en danca konkurso. Mi pasis feliĉan novan jaron kun amaso da homoj. Unufraze, mi partoprenis JES.

好久不见

Pli ol duono de blogaj mesaĝoj estas pri kiel oni ne skribas sufiĉe ofte. Dum tiu tempo mi faris staĝon en Slovakio per Esperanto kaj mi eble poste skribos pri tio en Esperanto ĉi tie, kiam mi havos la tempon.
